The Lantern Festival for International Students-Feeling the Unique Charm of Chinese Traditional Customs

     "I love Chinese culture, I like Chinese festivals!"

On February 15th, the Lantern Festival, a traditional Chinese festival. In the classroom of the International School of  East China Jiaotong University, more than 40 international students from Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries gathered together to eat dumplings, make lanterns and guess lantern riddles to enjoy a happy festival and feel the strong Chinese flavor.

 "The traditional activities are really interesting!"

Guessing Lantern riddles is an important activity of the Chinese Lantern Festival. The school has set up many lantern riddles, letting the international students feel the authentic Chinese culture.

"what never asks questions but is often answered?"Deng Ying, a teacher from the International School, asked the international students, pointing to the riddles.

"A doorbell!"Luqman, a student from Pakistan, answered firstly.

"Very Nice!" Teacher Deng Ying gave a thumbs-up.

"To guess one thing or a word in one sentence, the traditional Chinese culture is so charming and interesting!It is also very helpful for us to learn Chinese." Abir, from Bangladesh, is very interested in the lantern riddles.

Eating sweet dumplings is indispensable part for the Lantern Festival. Students sit together and ate freshly cooked sweet dumplings. "Sweet dumplings is very delicious, guessing lantern riddles while eating dumplings,this is the first time I have had such a Lantern Festival, so great!" Farrouk, a foreign student from Burkina Faso, said excitedly.

The international students also learned to assemble the lanterns under the guidance of Ms. Deng Ying, everyone showed their own handmade lanterns to the teacher.

"I love China and I love traditional Chinese culture."

Kamron is an international student from Uzbekistan. "My Chinese name is Li Xiaolong because I have practiced martial arts and boxing since I was a child, I like watching the Chinese movie of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, I am a loyal fan of them." Kamron told reporters that he has been longing for China since he was a child,  and this is his third year to study in China. The longer he lives in China, the more he likes China. In his opinion, Chinese traditional culture has a unique charm and always gives him a lot of surprises.

"I really like China, the Chinese people are very warm and friendly, the Chinese culture is rich and diverse, the Lantern Festival is very interesting, and I like it very much!" Bekzod, from Uzbekistan, said that he likes the traditional Chinese festivals very much, and every time the Chinese New Year makes him very happy.

"International students like Chinese traditional New Year culture very much. Through the Lantern Festival, international students can feel the traditional Chinese festive atmosphere and understand more about the Chinese culture, and better integrate into it." Said Cui Wanting , teacher from the International School.
